Day 32 of lockdown – Mandala 32 – Fun

Good morning
Wishing you a Fun-filled Friday!
There years ago, Manoj and I had conducted a Meditation camp at Dr Modi’s Resort at Karjat. On the last day of the camp, we met the owner of the resort, Dr Modi during lunch time. He had had a stroke recently and was on a wheelchair. He had difficulty swallowing and his speech was slurred. He asked us about the food and the stay in the resort. When we told him that “We were enjoying ourselves “, he replied with a broad smile on his face, “I am also enjoying”! Which just goes on to prove that Enjoyment depends less on the external conditions and more on the ‘Internal Conditioning’ !
I hope that you find many opportunities to have Fun in the coming days of the Lock down.
Do share with me if you have found some special Fun-filled activities in the last 5 weeks.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 33 of lockdown – Mandala 33-serenity

Good morning
Good morning! 2nd May.
I remember hearing a lovely story about Buddha from Osho. Once, during a visit to a village, some people started abusing Buddha; but he stayed calm and unruffled. When asked how he could stay unaffected by the abuses, Buddha answered, ” They may have thrown abuses at me, but I have not accepted them! ”
Don’t we often find that the world throws a lot of rubbish at us….it depends on Us what we do with it…If we choose to take it in, we start feeling agitated and angry; but if we refuse to take it in, we can stay calm and unruffled ! So let’s make a choice ….whether to take the negativity in or to leave it out !!
Wishing you all a Serene Saturday-Sunday !
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 34 of lockdown – Mandala 34 – Relaxed, Refreshed

Good morning! 4th. May
For the last two days, I have been having a stiff and severely painful right shoulder, affecting my sleep and making it more and more difficult to move my right upper limb. When I had to use only the left upper limb for everything, I realised that I have been taking so many things for granted. Simple tasks like brushing my teeth or combing hair or taking a bath are dependent on so many muscles and joints working together harmoniously. I experienced that problems with a small, seemingly insignificant muscle can play havoc with our daily activities. I was once again made aware of the importance of a healthy body and how much I should be thanking each and every part of my body every day. Thank youGod for this realisation.
Wishing you a Healthy Monday and the week ahead
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar
P.S. As I couldn’t draw with my right hand , I had the option of posting an old Mandala or creating a new Mandala without involving the right hand. I am sure you can guess which option I have chosen!

Day 35 of lockdown – Mandala 35 – Little Girl in a Storm

Good morning ! Have you read the story of the little girl who sat unruffled through a stormy flight ? When asked the secret of her calmness, she replied, “l knew I was in safe hands. My father is the pilot of this plane !” We too are going through a stormy phase in our lives , but just like this little girl, we are in the hands of our Parent ! If we have Trust that He will help us sail through any calamities, we can stay calm and at Peace even in these trying circumstances. Let us do everything that we need to do and leave the rest in His hands. Wishing you a Trustful Tuesday !

Day 38 of lockdown – Mandala 38 – Like attracts Like

7th May
Good morning! In the world of vibrations, *Like attracts Like!* So, if you send out vibrations of anger, resentment, hatred, blame, complaints; you attract the same vibrations and experiences in your life. But if you send out vibrations of Joy, Peace, Love, Gratitude, Appreciation, Satisfaction; then you will attract similar vibrations and circumstances into your life.
What do you want to send out into the world today? Have a beautiful day!
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 39 of lockdown – Mandala 39 – Waves

Day 8th May
Good morning
Today’s Mandala with its Vibrant colours is the outcome of an informal Mandala drawing class for my family. I was drawing this demo Mandala with inputs about “shapes to grow the Mandala” from the participants. At one point in time, my niece Anusha asked me to draw a “WAVE” shape. As I had never before drawn a wave in a Mandala, it was a challenge to me. But I decided to go with the flow, drew the waveforms……………and eventually,……… the result was a unique, never-before kind of Mandala which I have fallen in love with !
For the puzzle lovers , please find the “waves” in this Mandala.
Have a Vibrant Friday…..like this Mandala ! And Do try going with the Flow and letting go. You will also realise like me that we can get amazing results if we stop fighting (and saying that I can’t do it ) and just go with the flow !
Love, Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 40 of lockdown – Mandala 40 – Alzheimer Preventing Mandala

9th May
Good morning!
I have had wonderful opportunities to gain new insights in the last one week, following the pain and restriction of movements of my right shoulder and arm.
1. My respect for our musculoskeletal system has increased many fold. The fine tuning and coordination needed for seemingly simple tasks (like eating food) is amazing, to say the least!
2. I am pleasantly surprised by the resilience and flexibility of my body, especially the left arm and shoulder….my coordination while working with the left hand has increased by leaps and bounds in just a few days. Now, I am a firm believer in the concept of Neuroplasticity! And Today’s Mandala is a testimonial for this.
Today’s Mandala is the 6th of the series of Alzheimer Preventing Mandalas !!
If you have a lot of time on hand during this Lock down, do try and use your non dominant hand ( left hand for right handed people and vice versa ) for simple tasks.
Have a Satisfying weekend
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 41 of lockdown – Mandala 41

10th May
Good morning! It is said that at the centre of a storm, there’s a place which is calm and quiet. Amidst the chaos of the Pandemic outside, let us strive to be calm and unaffected inside……and Meditation can go a long way in helping us achieve this. Wishing you a Serene Sunday.

Day 43 of lockdown – Mandala 43

12th May
Good morning! In the current Pandemic, if we want to stay safe, we have to make efforts, not just on the physical level (like hygiene, nutritious food etc), but Psychologically and Spiritually as well. As Buddha says, “The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, nor to worry about the future, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.” I trust and pray that all of us can stay safe and healthy in the coming months.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 44 of lockdown – Mandala 44

13th. May
Good morning ! Hope this morning finds you in excellent Health and a buoyant mood. Some of us are missing the routine of the days before the Pandemic and are also mourning that those days may never be back. But let us remember what Rumi says, ” Don’t grieve. Anything you lose, comes round in another form ” So let us all trust that after the cleansing of the earth in this Pandemic, things will be even better than before. Have a Thankful Thursday.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 45 of lockdown – Mandala 45

Good morning ! I hope this beautiful morning finds you in excellent health and buoyant mood. As the Lock down is extended even further, some of us are getting worry lines over the forehead; worrying about their health, family, job, future, the Economy and so on. Whenever I start worrying about anything, I remember Eckhart Tolle’s quote, ” Focus your attention on the Now and tell me what problem you have ” ; and when I do that, I find that actually there’s no problem in the present moment…..maybe there’s some discomfort ( like my kitchen fan is not working since yesterday ) , but these discomforts only serve to increase my comfort zone ! So, instead of worrying about what’s going to happen, can we look at the whole scenario with Wonder in our eyes….as to what new Insights Man is gaining through this Pandemic, how the Earth is healing, how the pollution is decreasing, how Nature is balancing itself again and so on….. ? Wishing you a Worry-free And ‘Wonder’ful Wednesday!

Day 46 of lockdown – Mandala 46

15th May
Good morning! Hope you have chosen to be Joyful today instead of worrying about things that may never happen to you !
As Sadhguru says,” If you are concerned about the world, the first thing that you need to do is transform yourself into a Joyful being.”
All of us feel the need to give happiness to our near and dear ones. But we can do that only if we find the fountain of Joy that dwells within us !
So let us be in touch with the Joy within ourselves and spread the happiness around, so that the world is a better place to live in !
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 47 of lockdown – Mandala 47

16th May
Good morning! Hope this beautiful morning finds you at Peace with yourself.
As expected, the Lock down has been extended further. For some of us, this may seem like an unending ordeal. At this point, it will help us to remember Buddha’s saying, ” Every experience, no matter how bad it seems, holds within it a blessing of some kind. The goal is to find it ”
Even if the days and weeks ahead may seem dark, I am sure we can find rays of Hope if we look for them. The rays may not look very bright at the moment; but if we follow them, they will eventually lead us to a bright sunlit path.
Hoping that you can see many rays of Hope today, that you can discover New Opportunities for the future and look forward to the days ahead with a spring in your step and Joy in your heart.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 48 of lockdown – Mandala 48

17th May
Good morning !
I remember reading a wonderful quote some time back , ” *Stop being afraid of what can go wrong and start being excited about what can go right* ” I feel that this is absolutely apt for the current situation when the Corona Pandemic is slowly changing into a Fear Pandemic.
Have you read the story of a saint asking Death during a Pandemic, ” You told me that only 5000 will die, how is it that 50000 have died ? ” To which, Death replied, ” I killed only 5000, the rest died due to Fear !”
So, while we take proper precautions of hygiene, physical distancing and wearing masks, let us NOT tune in to the fear Pandemic. And the best way to do this would be to avoid excessive exposure to media, especially those posts/news that predict an impending doom. Let us all avoid fear provoking posts and concentrate (and spread) the Good News posts.
Hoping that all of us can focus on spreading Smiles and Hope and Positivity in the coming weeks.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 49 of lockdown – Mandala 49

18th May
Good morning! Yesterday, I was watching Sadhguru’s video about the current Pandemic. He said,” Let us take this opportunity to Upgrade ourselves in this period….physically, mentally, emotionally and energetically, so that we are at least 10 % fitter than earlier. Let us invest in ourselves so that we become more competent, more balanced human beings” Last week, I was reading an Osho discourse given during the Cholera epidemic in 1970s in which he says, “Any situation like this is a cause of fear for fools, but an Opportunity for the Wise !” He talks of making the best use of time by eating right, exercising, losing weight, reading books and of course, meditating! He also talks about Meditation acting like a Protective shield during epidemics.
Personally, I have always experienced that my energy level improves (which also improves my Immunity) after Meditating, with True Light, Mandalas and Reading. Have you found out which factors improve your energy level? Do pay an attention to this in the next few days.

Day 50 of lockdown – Mandala 50

19th May
Good morning! Yesterday, when I was trying to create space in my mobile by deleting unnecessary stuff, I came across a wonderful quote….” Not all storms come to disrupt your life. Some come to clear your path.” It was as if this quote is tailor-made for the current situation. Though we all may find that our normal routine has been disrupted and there’s uncertainty all around us, I have complete Trust that this particular storm is going to change the world for the better. Just as we clear our mobiles and computers ( and our cupboards and kitchens ) intermittently to create space by deleting unnecessary stuff, this Pandemic is making space in our Hearts and our Minds for more important values like Love and Compassion. Just as we realise that mere material wealth is of no use in saving lives, we are also slowly realising that Prayers and Good will and Love and Humanity are the values to cherish in the long run.

Do you honestly think that any of these Insights would have come to the humankind without going to this storm ? This storm…this Pandemic, is here to wake us up from our deep sleep of ignorance and Greed and to direct us on the path of long-lasting Joy! So, while I am praying earnestly that this Pandemic resolves as soon as possible with minimal loss of human lives, I am also thankful to the Almighty that this Pandemic is clearing the path for all of us to become better human beings.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 51 of lockdown – Mandala 51

20th May
Good morning!
I came across a quote today which set me thinking. The quote says, ” *Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it.*” Isn’t this absolutely true ? As doctors, we come across such situations very often. For one person, the diagnosis of diabetes may seem like losing all the pleasures in life and he can go into severe depression. But for someone else, the same diagnosis can be a Life-changer, leading to a healthy lifestyle with good food, exercise and relaxation/ meditation incorporated on a regular basis in daily life and subsequently he leads a happy, fulfilled Life.
As we both have been working with JDF, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation which works with Type 1 diabetics, we see many examples of the second type routinely. Though these kids and young adults have to routinely take 3 to 4 insulin injections every day, check their sugars 3 to 4 times a day ; they take this in their stride , excel in various fields and in general, enjoy Life.

These JDs ( as we call them ) do NOT react to their diagnosis negatively, but take the necessary action to stay Healthy.

Don’t you think that the same principle applies to the current Pandemic ? We can either choose to look at it as the greatest misfortune that has befallen us ( and remain depressed ) or we can rise above the challenge like a Phoenix and steer our lives ( and eventually, our home, the Earth ) in a better direction !
It’s just a question of how you look at it…as a problem or as an opportunity !
So, how are you looking at the current Pandemic ?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 52 of lockdown – Mandala 52

21st May
Good morning !
I think most of you must have read this post which has been circulating on whatsapp for quite some time, *”Your diet is not only what you eat, it is what you listen to, what you watch, what you read, the people you hang out with and the things that you subject your mind and soul to. Always be mindful of the things you put into your body, physically, emotionally and spiritually.”*
And I have been experiencing the truth of this for quite a few years now….from Before Corona times !!
About 8-10 years ago, I noticed a funny thing about myself. I would be in a great mood when I woke up in the morning; but as the day went by, I would find myself irritable or angry or frustrated. As I had started meditating a few years earlier, I decided to focus my awareness on exactly how and when this change in my mood was taking place. And very soon, I realised that most of the times, my mood changed as a consequence of an external factor….either hearing a bad news about a dear one or having an argument with someone. But even more than that, I realised that my mood remained good if I did not read the newspaper!! And my mood would be spoilt on the days that I had a leisurely breakfast along with reading the newspaper. It didn’t take me long to pinpoint the exact process of the mood change….any negative news, be it a violent act or corruption or the political situation or news predicting an economic doomsday (at least one of these news is given prominence daily in newspapers ! ) , ……after reading this news , I would get anxious or frustrated or angry. The mood change was very subtle, but it was definitely there. So I decided to either stop reading the news or to focus only on the good news. The second option is very difficult because most of the times , the bad news is in a prominent position and we really have to look for the Good news which is tucked away in a corner. Finally, I almost stopped reading the newspaper except for solving sudoku and other puzzles…..and then my mood remained stable on most days !!

I have had the same experience in the last 2-3 months of the Pandemic. Whenever I am exposed to posts or videos depicting the negative things happening around, my anxiety level tends to increase ….and I have to really work hard to get myself back to normal.

I do know that media plays an important role in our lives, but unfortunately, in the last few decades, the media has slowly changed to a sensation seeking and fear provoking force which is extremely powerful.
In uncertain times like the current one, most of us are in an extremely vulnerable state, so it would be better to stay away from the negative news if it doesn’t directly concern you…or at least read / watch the news only once or twice a day.
Taking in too much negative news ( either from newspapers or TV or social media or intenet or during your interaction with others )is like being poisoned slowly ! And any poison is bound to affect your Health ( Physical, Mental or Spiritual ) negatively.
So, do think about this…..do you want to feed yourself with poison everyday or do you want to stay Healthy and Happy ? The choice is yours !
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 53 of lockdown – Mandala 53

22nd May
Good morning!
Rumi says, ” Yesterday, I was clever, so I wanted to change the world.
Today I am wise, so I am changing myself! ”
I love Rumi! The way he hits the nail on the head….and that too, in a poetic language!
Coming back to this quote, even Buddha (and other Spiritual Masters) have talked in a similar manner, ” When things change inside you, things change around you! ”
So, changing yourself is the key to changing the world! We cannot bring Peace in the world if we try to do it from a space of Anger and hatred; but we can definitely work towards it by becoming more Loving and Compassionate.
So, do you want to see a better world around you ?….You know that you have to start working on yourself first !
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 54 of lockdown – Mandala 54

23rd May
Good morning !
Pema Chodron, an American /Tibetan Buddhist has said , *”Nothing ever goes away, until it has taught us what we need to learn !”*
Does this mean that the current Corona Pandemic will go away only after we have grasped some facts that we need to learn….like caring for Nature, caring for the Environment, giving more importance to values like Love and compassion rather than Material wealth, being Grateful for the countless blessings that have been showered on us right from our birth……..
Can you think of anything else that we need to learn….?
And of course, it’s very important that we retain these learnings after the crisis is over and change our thought processes and Lifestyle accordingly.
So , what is it that you have decided to change in your Lifestyle after the Pandemic is over ?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 55 of lockdown – Mandala 55

24th May
Good morning!
Here’s Rumi again! ” *These pains you feel are Messengers. Listen to them* ”
All of us are feeling pains at the moment, for various reasons…. as patients, as patients’ relatives, as migrants going back to their native place, as people losing jobs, as businessmen losing their income, anxieties, Fears, tensions…. all types of pains ….
As Rumi says, we need to listen to these messengers, and learn from them. We need to introspect and realise and rectify our mistakes. Only then, will we be able to bring a Heaven on earth !
Are these pains telling you anything ?
I hope Love can help reduce the intensity of these pains.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 56 of lockdown – Mandala 56

25th May
Good morning!
Have you thanked your body today?
As we all know; our bodies are super super computers in which all the organs and systems work together harmoniously. The fine tuning between the various organs is so exquisite that it is impossible to reproduce a system like this artificially. And yet, all of us take our bodies for granted. We don’t always give our body the care it needs; but even worse, we never ever think of thanking the body !!
Have you ever thanked your body and experienced what it feels like? If not, do try it out today ….just set aside 10 minutes of your time and before going to sleep, start thanking each and every part of your body. We all know that any machine works smoothly when we oil it , doesn’t it ? Similarly, our body works better, more harmoniously when we thank it from the bottom of our heart. Not only that, we can feel the body relaxing and enjoying the attention and the Gratitude we express towards it.

I have tried this out when I was not well and also when I am absolutely healthy ; and in both the situations, it’s been a wonderful experience for me.

Do try this technique today ….I am sure your body will feel happier and work more efficiently……and obviously, this will boost your Immunity greatly ( which is the need of the hour ) !

Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 57 of lockdown – Mandala 57

26th May
Good morning !
As we are trying to come to terms with the fact that the current Pandemic is still going strong in India and especially Mumbai, let us remember one thing, ” *THIS TOO SHALL PASS !* ”
Life is an endless chain of the so called Good and the Bad Times. The Good times are there for us to relax and Enjoy ; while the so called Bad times can be Great Teachers, giving us New Insights !
A few months later, when we look back at the current situation, we will be able to congratulate ourselves for facing this crisis courageously and for the Insights we have gained during this time. I earnestly Hope and Pray that all of us can mend our ways according to these new insights and work towards creating a Heaven on Earth, once this crisis is over.
Till then, let us remember this मंत्र “This too shall Pass !”
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 58 of lockdown – Mandala 58

27th May
Good morning !
The Enlightened saint Ramakrishna Paramhans has said, ” *The winds of Grace are always blowing, but you have to raise the sail.* “…..The Divine Blessings are being showered upon us all the time….continuously…., we just need to be Receptive to them.
I have heard Osho say, ” The sunlight may be shining brightly outside; but if your doors and windows remain tightly shut, your house will remain in darkness. On the other hand, if you open the door and windows, and let the Light in, your house will immediately brighten up! ”
In the present crisis, if we completely Trust the Divine Wisdom and are Open and Accepting and Grateful for the innumerable blessings being showered upon us even in these difficult times, we will be able to sail through this crisis with relative ease. We just need to be Receptive!
So, have you raised your sail to experience the winds of Grace?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 59 of lockdown – Mandala 59

28th May
Good morning!
All of us are facing a lot of anxieties and stresses these days. There’s a beautiful Breathing Meditation that can help reduce our anxieties.
Whenever you are feeling particularly anxious or tense, take some time off and sit quietly in your own space and start watching your breath. There’s no need to change your breathing, just become aware of your in-breath and out-breath. And as you become aware of your breathing, imagine that you are taking in Beautiful Golden Healing Energy with each incoming breath. Let this energy reach each and every cell of your body, touching it, caressing it and Healing it. And with each out-breath, imagine that you are throwing out all the anxieties and stresses and sadness and negativity.
As you continue to do this, you will feel your body relaxing and your tensions melting away. As this happens, you will experience yourself being surrounded by this beautiful Healing Energy. Continue for 8 to 10 minutes and repeat whenever needed.
…….continued…..
You can do this meditation even if you don’t have any obvious anxieties or stresses, as it will help you to relax and improve your Immunity.
Do try this out and let me know your experience.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 60 of lockdown – Mandala 60

29th May
Good morning!
Rumi says, ” If everything around you seems dark, look again. You may be the Light! ”
Buddha has said, ” अप्पो दीप भव “, meaning , ” Be a Light to yourself ”
The present time, when everything around you may seem dark; is the right time to look for your own Light , which can Light up not only your own life, but also the lives of those surrounding you.
And what better way than Meditation to find this Light within you ?
Hope you can start searching for this Inner Light ( and Inner Peace and Inner Joy ) during the present crisis.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 61 of lockdown – Mandala 61

30th May
Good morning!
The Pandemic is still going strong and some time or the other, all of us will have to go out and face the virus. And if we want to stay safe and healthy, we need to boost up our Immunity !
The known factors which improve Immunity and reduce our chances of getting a severe infection are nutritious food, regular exercise, certain practices like strict hygiene, physical distancing etc.
But there are some more factors affecting Immunity Positively, which have not been explored on a mass level. Relaxation techniques, various forms of Meditation can boost up Immunity greatly.
Another factor improving immunity is your level of Happiness! Whenever you are Happy, your resistance to infections is much better.
And a very important way to increase your level of Happiness is to be Grateful. It has been scientifically proved that *when you practise Gratitude, you are Happy*.
So, are you ready to try out this method for improving your immunity ?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 62 of lockdown – Mandala 62

31st May
Good morning!
I remember reading this lovely quote, ” *Just breathe….Inhale your blessings and Exhale Gratitude !* ”
If we think of How things could have been worse, How the death rates could have been much more , How most of us are protected and safe ; How we have a roof over our head and food on the table; we become aware of our Blessings. And once we are aware of our blessings, it’s easy to offer Gratitude, isn’t it?
Let us all continue to offer Gratitude for the blessings we have already received, and also in anticipation of the future blessings.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 63 of lockdown – Mandala 63

1st June
Good morning!
Today’s beautiful morning brings in not only a New day, but a New week and a New month as well. Let us hope that we can welcome this new day with New hopes in our hearts, so that we can respond to this New Pandemic in a manner suitable to the needs of the hour. And I sincerely feel that Meditation can help us achieve this easily.
Osho says about Meditation, ” In meditation, …..a revolution, a metamorphosis happens on its own accord. You start changing without any effort because of the New clarity, the New Light, the New experience, the New acquaintance with yourself. The whole existence becomes New. ”
I hope all of us can gain (through meditation) some New Insights and New methods from the hidden depths of our beings to face the current challenge with equanimity.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 64 of lockdown – Mandala 64

2nd June
Good morning friends!
Yesterday a dear friend sent me this beautiful quote by Rumi, ” *Walk patiently through this troubled world. And you will find a great treasure !* ”
It seems like Rumi has written this specially for the present times, doesn’t it ?
Another time Rumi says, *”The moment you accept what troubles you have been given, the door will open “*…..this too fits the present situation, doesn’t it ?
Unconditionally accepting whatever situation you find yourself in and having Patience are two qualities that will help us sail through any crisis.
Total unconditional Acceptance means not fighting with the situation, not asking questions like ,” Why me ? ” (Of course, we can and should try to reflect on why the world has found itself in the present predicament, so that we can change our ways to prevent a recurrence)
Are you ready to try out what Rumi says to see the doors opening and to find the treasures within ?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 65 of lockdown – Mandala 65

3rd June
Good morning!
Yesterday, a friend sent me the video of the beautiful song “Que sera sera ” by Doris Day. Though I have heard this song many times, it was a pleasure to listen to it again. And as I listened to the words carefully, I realised that this song is apt for the present times. Each stanza of the song ends with,
” Que sera sera
Whatever will be, will be
The future’s not ours to see
Que sera sera
What will be, will be ”
And this is exactly the philosophy which ours saints have been teaching us for hundreds and thousands of years.
I felt that this song is similar to the concept of संत तुकाराम,
” ठेविले अनंते, तैसेची रहावे
चित्ती असो द्यावे समाधान ”
I can find three great virtues in this song Que sera sera — *Acceptance, Trust and Living in the Now !*
As I understand it, Acceptance means accepting gracefully whatever situation you find yourself in, without complaining or blaming. ( It does NOT mean giving up ) When we accept any problem unconditionally, we are not wasting our energy fighting it ,but we are utilising all our energy in doing what needs to be done ; and therefore , we are able to take the right decisions to tide over any crisis.
Total Trust in God helps us find our Inner resources needed to deal with the situation.
And staying in the present moment is advised by all saints and Enlightened souls. Living in the Now avoids unnecessary sadness or guilt about the Past and unnecessary anxieties about the Future. As these feelings (which can drain our energy) are eliminated, we can improve our efficiency and Capacity to face any problems.
So, are you ready to practise Acceptance, Trust and Living in the present moment?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 66 of lockdown – Mandala 66

4th June
Good morning!
Buddha says, *”Every morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.”*
If we continually complain about the situation or blame others for the tough times, or persistently focus on the negatives ; we remain frustrated, angry, dissatisfied and unhappy.
But if we decide that ‘ whatever the situation, I am going to focus on the positives, even if the positives are only 1 or 2 %’ ; then we find our situation changing for the better and Miracles start surrounding us !
I have personally experienced this many times…..if I choose to stay angry with someone or something, my entire day is lost to me. On the other hand, when I decide to Let go of my negativity; I am filled with Joy and my day is lit up!
The Choice is in our hands…totally !!
So, what is your Choice for today?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 67 of lockdown – Mandala 67

5th June
Good morning!
Rumi says, *”You wander from room to room, hunting for the diamond necklace, that is already around your neck ! “*
He also says , *”We carry inside us, the wonders we seek outside “*
All of us are seeking outside the treasures of Joy and Peace, but we are unaware that these treasures actually lie inside us.
Saint Kabir has said,
“मोको कहां ढूँढे रे बन्दे,
मैं तो तेरे पास में….”
These treasures are hidden by the negativity that we carry within us, and as soon as we start moving towards positivity, we start getting glimpses of this Joy and Peace which are our inherent nature.
Do you really want to experience this Inner Joy and Peace ? The key to it is Relaxed Awareness…..and when you practice Relaxed Awareness, the Joy and Peace will come seeking you…..just as Rumi says,
*”What you seek , is seeking you ! “*
Hope you can get glimpses of this Joy and Peace today !
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 68 of lockdown – Mandala 68

7th June
Good morning!
Rumi says, ” *Keep knocking and the Joy inside will eventually open a window and look out to see who is there* ”
I have tried knocking and got glimpses of this Joy and Peace and the Inner Light. But I lose them when I forget to knock for prolonged periods!
What about you? Have you tried knocking to find the Joy that resides in our innermost depths?
I am sure you will find it if you persist in your efforts!
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 69 of lockdown – Mandala 69

6th June
Good morning!
A few days ago, I learnt a wonderful Meditation technique described by Osho in his book “Awareness Inc.”
It takes into consideration the Law of Affirmation. Osho says, “There’s a great law called ‘the law of affirmation’. If you can affirm something deeply, totally, absolutely, it starts becoming real……stop affirming negativities and start affirming positivities.”
The technique of this meditation is very simple. First, identity which negativity takes hold of you often, and before going to sleep, affirm to yourself 20 times the exact opposite positivity. For example, if sadness is your problem, affirm Joy ! If Anger is troubling you, affirm Compassion. For Jealousy, you may affirm Satisfaction and Joy. For Fear, affirm Love. For anxieties and worries, affirm Relaxation.
Affirm to yourself that this positivity is going to happen, it’s already on the way. Repeat this loudly to yourself 20 times and fall asleep.
Repeat the process of affirming the positivity 20 times when you wake up, before opening your eyes.
Do this for 7 days and you will be able to drop your negativity. Next week, you can choose another negative emotion and drop that too. And every week , choose one positivity and Imbibe it.
Would you like to try it out ?
I know it will give you excellent results.

Day 70 of lockdown – Mandala 70

8th June
Good morning!
As the Lock down is slowly opening up, people are excited on one hand at the prospect of resuming a normal life; and on the other hand, there’s a fear too, because we all know that the virus has not really gone away. Some people are obsessed with the virus and are all the time, operating out of fear; while some others are becoming careless and not following the basic rules of protecting oneself. Both these extremes need to be avoided. We need to follow all the basic rules of hygiene….physical distancing, using a mask and frequent hand washing. At the same time, we would find it difficult to live if we become paranoid and panicky about catching the virus.
Osho has many times given the example of a tightrope walker for achieving balance. The tightrope walker leans first to one side and then to the other. Only if he learns this knack can he remain safe on the rope.

Our Life is also like walking on a tightrope even in normal circumstances, more so in the present situation. We all have to take good care that we do not lean too much on one side or the other; or else, we are likely to topple! So, all of us need to respond optimally and wisely so as to maintain our balance and stay centred in these challenging times.
I hope you all have the knack to achieve Balance in the current scenario.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 71 of lockdown – Mandala 71

9th June
Good morning!
Yesterday I came across a quote, ” *Go 24 hours without complaining. Not even once…. then see how your life starts changing! *”
I have read this quote earlier too and I thought it sounds quite easy, doesn’t it? (I also thought that I don’t really complain much!!)
But yesterday, when I decided to actually put it into practice, I was surprised. Within a few minutes, I realised how difficult it actually is !!
Not half an hour had passed after I made the resolution; and I found myself complaining about some new changes we have made in the house and how it is affecting my set routine. Luckily, as the resolution was fresh in mind, I caught myself in time and stopped complaining. And made the same resolution once again!

With this experience, I became aware of ‘ how complaining has become a second nature to most of us and how we don’t even realise at times that we are complaining! ‘
With this New Insight, I am trying my best to stop myself from any complaints. When I see the complaining part of my mind trying to gain access through the back door ,I am consciously trying to look at the blessings that I have been receiving and am offering Gratitude for them .
Would you like to try this out today ?
Wishing you the next 24 hours without complaints !! Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 72 of lockdown – Mandala 72

10th June
Good morning!
Rumi says, *”Try not to resist the changes that come your way. Instead let life live through you. And do not worry that your life is turning upside down. How do you know that the side you are used to is better than the one to come? “*
When I read this, I thought as if Rumi is talking to all of us facing the current Pandemic. As he says, the lives of many have turned upside down and we all know that the future is going to bring lots of changes…..and that’s what most of us are worried about. We are so used to our zones of comfort that we always resist any changes, fearful of the uncertainty and insecurity of the New Future.
But I am sure that if we take the right steps in the right direction and make the right choices, the Earth will start healing and we ourselves will start healing……and then, we can hope for a Heaven on Earth where we can sing and dance and rejoice !! Hoping that we can make the right choices so that the future is brighter and more beautiful.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 73 of lockdown – Mandala 73

11th June
Good morning!
Osho says, ” *With such a small life, with such a small energy source, it is simply stupid to waste it in sadness, in anger, in hatred, in jealousy. Use it in love, use it in some creative act, use it in friendship, use it in meditation: Do something with it which takes you higher. And the higher you go, the more energy sources become available to you. At the highest point of consciousness, you are almost a Godliness. * ”
Does it sound easy and simple to follow? Trust me, it’s neither easy nor simple. From my personal experience, I can assure you that though we may know this as theory, it’s very difficult to put it into practice continuously. There are times when it is easy to practise, but there are also times when it seems impossible to follow.
I hope that all of us can go higher by following this advice, so that more energy sources become available to us, which we can use to beautify this world.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 74 of lockdown – Mandala 74

12th June
Good morning!
Yesterday I came across Wayne Dyer’s quote, *” If you believe it will work out, you will see opportunities. If you believe it won’t, you will see obstacles.”* And I thought …this is sooooo appropriate for the present times. Those who believe that things will work out well, are already finding new hopes and new opportunities.

What about you? Are you seeing obstacles or opportunities?

Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 75 of lockdown – Mandala 75

13th June
Good morning!
I am sure many of you have had this experience while cleaning cupboards. As you start sorting out things, suddenly you find something precious, something which you had forgotten about; but when you see it now, you realise it is something you cherish and were looking for subconsciously.
A similar thing happened to me yesterday. As usual, I was trying to create space on my mobile by deleting unwanted images and suddenly I found this beautiful quote…..” *You carry within you, the wisdom to heal your soul !* ” I was moved when I read the quote and realised that this holds true for your body also.
All of us have this wisdom actually but we are not in touch with it. The trick is to get in touch with this wisdom….and what better way than Meditation to do that?
I do hope all of us can get in touch with this wisdom to heal our body and soul, especially in these troubled times.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 76 of lockdown – Mandala 76

14th June
Good morning!
Someone sent me this yesterday. *”While you are sanitizing and wiping everything down, be sure to wipe the hatred out of your heart. That’s a virus too “*
As I was reading it and agreeing with it completely, I remembered a teaching by Dalai Lama, ” *The world around us will never be peaceful until we ourselves are at PEACE WITHIN. If we are fighting and angry on the inside, we will never experience the opposite on the outside* ”
So, if we want Peace in this world, it would appear that the solution is very simple ; but are we ready to follow this ?
Are we ready to wipe the hatred out of our hearts ……that is the real question. And the Earth’s and Humankind’s future depends on our answer!
Hope all of us can choose Love instead of hatred.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 77 of lockdown – Mandala 77

15th June
Good morning!
Eckhart Tolle says, ” *The power is in you. The answer is in you. And you are the answer to all your searches……you are the goal. You are the answer. It’s never outside.* ”
I felt reassured when I read this. If I have the power and the answers within me, it means that I don’t have to go far to look for solutions to any problems. I just have to look deep inside me…..
And just when I was contemplating this, I came across another beautiful quote, *”The magic isn’t outside of you, my love , stop searching for it. You are the Magic”*
This made my day absolutely Magical!
Are you ready to unearth that Power, that Magic in you, which is the answer to all your searches and all your problems?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 78 of lockdown – Mandala 78

16th June
Good morning!
Most of us have heard of the Placebo effect, haven’t we?
The term Placebo is derived from Latin. Placēbō, means “I shall please”, which originates from placeō, which means “I please”.
We come across this Placebo effect very often in medicine. Placebo effect is a remarkable phenomenon in which a placebo — an inactive substance like sugar, distilled water, or saline solution — can sometimes improve a patient’s condition simply because the person has the expectation, the belief or the trust that it will be helpful. Expectation to heal plays a potent role in the placebo effect. The more a person believes they are going to benefit from a treatment, the more likely it is that they will experience a benefit.
As a doctor, I have seen this Placebo effect very often, especially in seemingly incurable diseases like Cancer. I know of numerous examples of patients , who were written off by doctors, but survived by taking some obscure treatments like wheatgrass or Amla or just trusting their spiritual gurus. I honestly believe that this cure is the result of this Trust.

Placebo is known pretty well by non medicos , but have you heard about the Nocebo effect ?
The term nocebo (Latin nocēbō, “I shall harm”, from noceō, “I harm”) was coined by Walter Kennedy in 1961 to denote the counterpart to the use of placebo.
Nocebo is the exact opposite of Placebo. Here , the person believes that a particular treatment is going to harm him/ her and if this belief is very strong, then this person experiences all sorts of side effects from the treatment, simply because he / she expects that to happen.

In short, the outcome of any treatment depends greatly on the patient’s attitude towards the treatment. If the attitude is positive, we get positive results ; but if there is negative expectation , it’s very likely that the outcome would be negative.

Don’t you think this is true with everything in Life ? If we believe and Trust that things will turn out well, they do ! On the other hand, if we are anxious and fearful and pessimistic ; if we strongly believe that everything is going to go wrong, then of course, things deteriorate.

In the present scenario, what is your attitude ? I do hope you choose to believe and Trust that everything will be alright in the end.

Day 79 of lockdown – Mandala 79

17th June
Good morning!
Wayne Dyer says, ” *You cannot always control what goes on outside, but you can always control what goes on inside.* ” How true for the present situation ! There are many things going on outside over which we have no control; but we definitely have control over how we choose to respond to them. We can either choose to be sad, frustrated, angry, complaining or blaming…….which will certainly add to our miseries, right? On the other hand, we can choose to focus on our strengths and capabilities and remain hopeful, optimistic……which will help us stay relaxed and peaceful.
So let us focus on everything that we can control inside us , so that we find more ways to tackle the current scenario successfully.

Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 80 of lockdown – Mandala 80

18th June
Good morning!
Yesterday, as I was chatting with a friend, she told me that her shoulder is troubling her a lot. We often hear people talk like this, don’t we? Someone says, ” My knees are troubling me”; somebody else says, ” My back is killing me “. At times, people accuse the part which is hurting, as if this body part is troubling them purposefully. I too , have been guilty of doing this in the past, before I started meditating.
But these days, I have changed my approach. Now, whenever I have a knee pain or a backache, I caress that part and talk to that body part….I tell the body part, ” You have been working for me all these years. Thank you so much. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your work. And is there anything I can do for you to reduce the pain? ”
…..and when I am talking to my body in this manner, I can actually feel that body part relaxing and feeling happy. (We have a wonderful word for this feeling in Marathi….सुखावणं….)
So, rather than blaming the body part for the pain , if we treat it as a friend and thank it deeply and sincerely, it responds to the gratitude and starts functioning better.
Do try out this technique whenever you have aches and pains anywhere in the body and let me know the results.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawekar

Day 81 of lockdown – Mandala 81

19th June
Good morning!
I was re-reading a Rumi quote which says, *”Never miss an opportunity to show your love. Apart from love, everything passes away.”* Though I have read this quote many many times; today for the first time, I realised that I have been missing the opportunity to show Love almost every day.
When I don’t listen attentively to what my son is telling me, I have missed it. When I answer a phone call of a patient without empathy ; when I get angry with my family for stupid reasons; when I hold on to my anger for long periods ( with the thought that I am right and the other person is wrong ); when I don’t appreciate the other person ; when I jump to conclusions and judge somebody without any understanding about his/ her situation in life ; when I blame others for what is happening in my life……..all these are missed opportunities for showing my love; and I seem to be doing one or many of these things every single day !

When I started thinking about these lost opportunities, I thought of how I could grasp them and use them to improve myself…..and I realised that I just need to be more alert, more aware, more empathetic and tuned in to Love for this to happen !

I am hoping and praying that I can imbibe Rumi’s Mantra of Love into my whole being, can make it a part of me so that I don’t miss out on a single opportunity to LOVE. To begin with, I wish I can be successful at least a few times a day…..

What about you ? Are you ready to embark on this path of Love?

Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 82 of lockdown – Mandala 82

20th June
Good morning!
I read this quote a few days ago —-
*”Sometimes we are tested not to show our weaknesses, but to discover our strengths”* ……and it set me thinking. As I reflected back on the past two and half months, I realised that I have indeed discovered quite a few strengths in myself and my family. And I am quite sure that I would not have become aware of these strengths if we did not have to go through this Lock down.
I am not talking of just physical strengths here, though I have discovered them also ; but I feel blessed that I have been able to connect with my inner strengths, my inner treasures during these trying times. Though I have had my moments of sadness or fear in these times of uncertainty; I have experienced my Inner Light and Inner Peace. As I got in touch with my innermost being, I realised that my strengths are far more than my weaknesses and that has boosted my morale tremendously.
Staying happy and creative while going through this crisis has given me the confidence that I can emerge victorious in any other crisis in future.
What about you ? Which of your strengths have you rediscovered?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 83 of lockdown – Mandala 83

21st June
Good morning!
Have you read the story of ” The Empty boat “? It’s about a monk who is sitting in meditation with his eyes closed in a boat in the middle of a lake. Suddenly, his meditation is disturbed by being bumped by another boat. He finds anger rising within him and is ready to shout at the boatman who bumped into him; but when he opens his eyes, he finds that it is an empty boat which collided with his own. And that is the moment of realisation for him that ” *Whenever I get angry, the anger is within me. The other person ( or situation ) is like an empty boat.*”
I find that this is so true with my anger too. If I am angry within, anything can act like the ‘bump’….a trigger for my anger ; but if I am at Peace within, nothing can disturb me.
Unfortunately, I find myself getting angry at least once every day !
But I am working on it and hoping that the external bumps will soon not have any effect on my internal Peace.
What is your experience ?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 84 of lockdown – Mandala 84

22nd June
Good morning!
Have you ever played the game of Scrabble? For those who have never played it, I will try to explain it in short. It’s a board game in which you create words on a chequerboard using 7 alphabetical letters that you draw from a bag. If you can use all 7 letters to create words, you get bonus marks. Subsequent players have to make use of the words already existent on the board to create new words.
During my chemo days, we used to play Scrabble very often. Once , when the game was in progress for some time, I drew 7 letters and found that they were all vowels. .
If you have played Scrabble, you know how difficult it can be to use all 7 vowels , so I was about to give up; but then thought, “Let me at least give it a try “….so I started working out where I could use these 7 vowels; and to my surprise, within a very short span of time, I could use all 7 of them ! I was pleasantly surprised and realised that this happened because I didn’t give up on the task. Once I decided to pursue it, I found ways of doing it, though this was not a normal scenario.
A similar thing happened a couple of days later, but this time I drew 7 consonants and not a single vowel. A very difficult task again, but the earlier experience was etched in my mind, so once again I tried to formulate words with these 7 consonants ( of course, using the words on the board ) ; and this time too, I succeeded in using all 7 letters !
What did I learn from this ?…. That if I am open to giving my best in a difficult situation, I can succeed even if the odds are against me !
After all, Life is like a game, isn’t it ? We are dealt some cards, we can’t change them; so the only thing in our hands is to make the best use of the available cards. And if I am open to explore new possibilities, then I can use my hidden potentials and create new opportunities for myself !
Does all this remind you of our present situation ?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 85 of lockdown – Mandala 85

23rd June
Good morning !
Rumi says, *”Be a lamp, a lifeboat , a ladder. Help someone’s soul heal. Walk out of your house like a shepherd. “*
As I read these poetic words, I was overwhelmed by a deep feeling of gratitude. These beautiful words touched my heart and my soul as I remembered the Angels in human form who have helped heal my soul, especially in the turbulent times of my life. I have been fortunate enough to find lamps lighting my path, lifeboats preventing me from drowning and ladders helping me climb higher and higher. There have been wonderful people in my life holding my hand in difficult times, or just being there for me in crises. I had tears of Gratitude in my eyes as these memories were rekindled.
I hope and pray that I too, am permitted to be a lamp or a lifeboat or a ladder for someone in distress; that I can walk out of my house like a shepherd !
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 86 of lockdown – Mandala 86

24th June
Good morning!
Another Rumi quote…… *”Do a good deed and throw it in the river, One day it will come back to you in the desert. “*
How poetically Rumi talks about not expecting anything back when you are helping someone.
I remember reading something on similar lines by Osho. Osho says, ” When you help someone, do not expect anything in return…..don’t think that this person will help you sometime in future. Just help him and forget about it.” He further adds, ” Trust completely that just as God sent you to help this person ; whenever you need help, he will send someone to help you.”
I had read another quote some time back…… *The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade , you do not expect to sit !*
These days, I am trying my best to do what Osho and Rumi are advising …..planting trees under whose shade I don’t expect to sit !
What about you ?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 87 of lockdown – Mandala 87

25th June
Good morning with another beautiful Rumi quote ,” When I run after what I think I want, my days are a furnace of stress and anxiety ; if I sit in my own place of patience, what I need flows to me, and without pain. From this I understand that what I want also wants me, is looking for me and attracting me. There is a great secret here for anyone who can grasp it. ”
Is this Pandemic here to teach us not to run so much after our wants that we are stressed out and anxious all the time ? To have patience and sit back and wait for things to unfold in their own time….. to wait and realise ( as Osho says ) that *”Existence has its own timetable “*…..
Or as the Zen proverb says, ” *Sitting silently, doing nothing, Spring comes and grass grows by itself* “….
Are we ready now to sit silently, do nothing and wait for the grass to grow ?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 88 of lockdown – Mandala 88

26th June
Good morning !
” *The wound is the place where Light enters you* “….when I read this quote by Rumi, I was reminded of a similar saying which we have heard from our saints ,” *Pain is the doorway to God* ”
In my younger days, I could not fully grasp the meaning of this profound statement. But as I grew up and faced the many challenges that Life presented, I realised how true these sayings are ! Most of us take things for granted when everything is going smoothly, don’t we ? This is true for almost everything in life, ….. the equipments ( like fridge, TV, car etc) which we use daily ( we realise their importance only when they stop functioning ) …… nature ( पंचमहाभूतं ), we realise the Power of these forces only when a calamity like the recent cyclone Nisarg strikes…..our health , which we take for granted till we fall sick…..and of course, our near and dear ones….we are truly made aware of the place they occupy in our hearts only after they pass on or their existence is threatened…

But each of these crises can become an opportunity to rise higher and to awaken to the many truths of Life.

For us, my husband’s Rheumatoid arthritis 25 years ago was an extremely difficult period, but it also lead us on to the path of Meditation, which may not have happened in the normal course of events, so, in that sense his pain opened the doors for us.
6 years ago, the treatment of my cancer was another opportunity to learn more about Life’s truths.

I strongly believe that I am a better human being for having gone through these trials of Life.

So , even if it may seem difficult and impossible at times, let us accept the present crisis with Gratitude and a Hope that the Human race will evolve and become more Loving after going through this Pandemic.
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 89 of lockdown – Mandala 89

27th June
Good morning !
Yesterday, I came across an interesting statement by Wayne Dyer. ” *Loving people live in a loving world. Hostile people live in a hostile world. Same world*” As I read this and pondered over it, I remembered a story I had heard long ago in one of Osho’s discourses. The story goes like this :
A traveller came to a new city and asked the guard guarding the gates of the city , ” How are the people in this city ? ” The guard answered with the question, ” How were the people in the city you come from ? “. The traveller said that everyone in the previous city was horrible. The guard told him, ” Then you will also find the people here horrible ! ” A little while later, another tourist asked the same question before entering the city. To the guard’s question, this tourist replied that everyone in the previous city was wonderful ! The guard replied, ” Then you will also find the people here wonderful ! ”
Same city….different people, depending on your perception and your vibrations !!…

I have myself experienced this in a small way, especially when I go somewhere ( bank or some office ) to register a complaint….If I go with anger and bitterness in my heart, I find that I am not treated well, which worsens my mood. On the other hand, if I register the complaint with a smile on my face (or at least talk matter of fact…without anger ), my complaint gets resolved sooner. From this I understand that if my perspective changes, the same situation can result in different outcomes. So, these days, I am trying my best to live in a loving world !

What about you ? Are you living in a loving world or a hostile world ?

Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 90 of lockdown – Mandala 90

28th June
Good morning !
Just as I was trying to decide what to write today, I remembered a wonderful Osho saying , . *“Be realistic: Plan for a miracle ! ”*
As I remembered it, I could imagine the twinkling eyes of Osho as he must have said it and could feel laughter bubbling out of me……and then and there I decided that I am planning for a miracle !!

What about you ? Do you want to plan for a miracle ? Come, be my guest !

Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 91 of lockdown – Mandala 91

29th June
Good morning!
Wayne Dyer has said, *“With everything that has happened to you, you can feel sorry for yourself or treat what has happened as a gift. You get to choose.”*

How true this is ! In a similar manner, he also says, *”I cannot always control what goes on outside. But I can always control what goes on inside.”*

I have had the experience that when I am in control of what happens inside me, the outside chaos loses its power to affect me negatively. That’s why I have been trying my best to treat the current crisis as a gift, exploring the various opportunities that are opening up and making the best of this situation. And Meditation….being aware ….is my best self- help tool for this purpose.
What about you?
Are you feeling sorry for yourself or treating this Pandemic as a gift?
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 92 of lockdown – Mandala 92

30th June
Good morning!
Rumi says, ” *There’s a fountain inside you. Don’t walk around with an empty bucket* ”

As I read this, I could remember the times when I had doubts about my strength , my capabilities……and also remembered the difficult times during which I could draw my strength from this fountain inside me……and emerge victorious in the face of calamity ! Put simply, we are not aware of our own strengths, our inner Light , our courage and many more of our treasures…..treasures that are not obvious to the eye in the normal circumstances, but which can come to the surface in adversities.
Haven’t we all experienced this some time or the other in our lives…..times when everything looks dark and gloomy, but our inner fountains are full of nourishment that can carry us through to have a glimpse of the sunrise ?
Hoping and praying that all of us find this fountain dancing within us….
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 93 of lockdown – Mandala 93

Good morning friends!
Today I would like to share a true story that took place many years ago, when I was working as an Honorary Paediatrician at a small municipal maternity home. One day, while I was taking my rounds, one of the Sisters came running to call me, and asked me to have a look at a child which was brought to the hospital as an emergency. I found a 9 – 10 month old child who was not breathing, the heart was not beating. Immediately, we started resuscitation while asking the parents what had happened. Apparently, this child had just learnt to walk with support and walked into the bathroom where a tub was filled with water. The child probably lost its balance and was found some time later by the mother in the tub with the head submerged under water and not breathing. They were not sure how much time the child had been under water. As they stayed just across the hospital, they had rushed to the hospital with the child. We continued our efforts to revive the child, but there was no response. In the meanwhile, an ambulance had been called to take the child to a bigger hospital. The ambulance arrived, but even after 25-30 minutes, there was no heart beat, no breathing. The eyes of the child were showing evidence of brain death. So sadly, I asked the Sister to send away the ambulance as there was no point in transferring a dead child. It was at this moment that a miracle occurred. Even after more than 25 years which have passed since this incident, I still vividly remember the next few minutes of this dramatic situation. I told the Sisters that we have to declare the death to the parents and turned away to wash my hands. Just as I was washing my hands, one of the Sisters shouted, ” Madam, come quickly! The child has taken a breath !” Once again, I rushed to the baby, restarted the resuscitation, and this time the baby revived enough to be transferred to a bigger hospital in the ambulance. We had clearly saved the child for the time being, but I had many misgivings about the outcome of the baby; because the baby had not been breathing for more than half an hour and there was every likelihood that the baby would have at least some amount of brain damage. Later in the evening, I called the bigger hospital with this fear in my heart, dreading to hear about the child’s condition and I was pleasantly surprised to hear that the baby was absolutely fine, and was sitting up in bed having dinner. I still kept my fingers crossed and asked the parents to come and see me after discharge. A couple of days later , a happy mother brought the child to our hospital and on examination, the child looked absolutely normal. But I wanted to be sure that everything was alright with respect to the functioning of the brain; so I asked the mother if she found any difference in the child after this episode of near drowning. The mother thought for a few minutes and said,”yes….. there’s a difference….. ” I waited with bated breath as she continued, ” She was not talking before this incident, now she has started talking ! ” I almost laughed in relief. Here I was , expecting a horrible outcome …..and finding that there was improvement instead !!

And this was the time when I learnt for sure that there are so many things beyond our control in life. As a doctor , my job is to do my best, but the outcome is entirely in HIS hands. We find very often that a person may die in spite of the best possible medical treatment ; and another , like this child, may survive in spite of an expected poor outcome.
You can call this controlling force God or luck or fortune, but the fact remains that we can only do so much in any situation, and the outcome depends on so many factors beyond our control . As doctors, many of us realise this fact quite early in our practice …like me in this situation…., and it can ( or should ! ) make us more humble. But for those who don’t realise it, it is very likely that they turn egotistical with their successful outcomes, they start thinking that they can control everything in their lives. And they are in for a shock when things don’t go their way.

And is this not true for every profession? Medical professionals may grasp this reality sooner ,being nearer to death and dying than others ; but every profession, every human being, faces many life situations in which they have to face and accept this reality ….that we cannot control everything in our lives, certainly not the span of our lives and there’s something larger than us which controls our lives.

In the current pandemic too, we have witnessed many elderly, high risk patients recover quickly from covid ; while some younger, low risk patients succumbed to the infection.
We have seen Covid warriors working very hard, getting exposed to many Covid cases , but remaining healthy and unscathed; and have also seen people taking utmost care….not going out at all, not allowing anyone to enter their homes, taking all possible hygienic precautions and still getting the infection!!

There’s no logic and reasoning in this, there’s no certainty like mathematical equations, the only certainty is that LIFE IS UNCERTAIN ! and the sooner we realise and accept it, the happier we can be.

Of course, this does NOT mean leaving everything to the mercy of God. It doesn’t mean that we sit back and do nothing. It just means that we do everything in our power , every single thing that we can, but leave the outcome to the higher Powers. We MUST do all that we can, with care and compassion and attention to details, but we should also be able to accept the fact that things can go wrong even if we do our best. And this is true for everyone, not just medical professionals. When we learn this acceptance and humility, we can only bow down in gratitude when things work out well for us. And if things do go wrong when we have done our best, we are able to accept the outcome as a matter of fact, without feeling guilty.

Hoping that all of us can accept the uncertainties of Life and still enjoy Life to the fullest,

Day 94 of lockdown – Mandala 94

30th June
Good morning!I remember reading a beautiful sentence a few months ago, ” The day I decided that Life was Magical, suddenly there was Magic all around me.”  And I can vouch for it especially during this Lock down period. We may be confined to our homes, but if you look outside there’s Spring in the air ! Flowers are blooming, their fragrance is around us, birds are singing, and what’s more, all of us are healthy and protected. Is not that Magic enough ? Wishing you a Magical Monday and a Magical week ahead.💚💛

Day 96 of lockdown – Mandala 96

Good morning friends!

A few days ago someone called me up to discuss an uncommon medical problem of a young child. This child was already under treatment from a specialist. After discussing the case with me,she asked me, “Will True Light help this child?”

Manoj and I are often asked questions like this. Many people know that Manoj has recovered from a chronic painful and difficult to cure condition called rheumatoid arthritis with the help of meditation. Those who have read his book एका पुनर्जन्माची कथा, describing his journey from a painful disease to a complete painfree medical remission with the help of meditation, find his story very impressive and inspiring. They too ask ,”How can meditation help us in our lives? “Quite a few people know about my experiences with True Light during my chemotherapy and they too are interested in knowing whether True Light can help in the cure of certain medical conditions.

Answering such questions is very difficult, especially because effects of spiritual practises like meditation and True Light are subjective. And therefore the effects seen in one person may not be reproducible In somebody else. Also, whenever one tries out these practices with an open mind, the results are excellent; but if you enter any spiritual practice with a lot of expectations, the expectations themselves can affect the outcome negatively.

Osho has often talked about this. He advises us to go into meditation with an open mind, ready and willing to experience ; and at the same time, to go without expectations. Because, the moment expectations come in, you are focusing on the expectations and not on the experience itself. He has also said that you can enjoy the wonderful experiences and hope for more; but not to get attached to them. The moment you get attached, that attachment acts like a hindrance.

Something else that can affect the whole process positively is TRUST ! Just like you trust your doctor to do the best for you and to cure you; if you trust in the power of existence ( or the higher powers), that Trust itself can invite wonderful experiences into your life. But if that Trust is replaced by a closed mind,it is difficult for any spiritual practice to help you. Approaching these practices with curiosity (कुतूहल ) rather than sarcasm helps a lot !

I feel that when we couple an open mind with Trust, we can connect with our Inner strength and Peace more easily; this also helps us to unconditionally accept the outcome and to deal with it in the best possible manner.

So, whenever people ask us if a particular spiritual practice can help in curing a certain problem….be it physical or psychological…. it is difficult to answer with a simple yes or no. The only thing that we can say is, go into it with openness and trust, at the same time not focusing on the cure….not expecting anything; and then you will be able to experience miracles like us !! I know that this is easier said than done ! But we have seen many people benefiting when they practice with Openness and Trust……and we have also seen that people who can’t do this, may not be satisfied with the results.

Let us remember that Spirituality is the foundation of Life and when this foundation is strong, Miracles Happen !

Hoping that many of you can experience and enjoy the joyful and peaceful experiences of meditation or any spiritual practice that appeals to you ,

Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 97 of lockdown – Mandala 97

Good morning friends !

Have you watched ‘ the social dilemma’, an original Netflix documentary ? If you have not yet seen it, it’s time to make time to see it! I think it MUST BE SEEN by everyone who uses social media in some way or the other.

My son Satyajit recommended it to us and he insisted that all 3 of us watch it together. In the pre-covid days, we have watched some beautiful films like ‘ Loving Vincent ‘ in theatres, which were recommended by Satyajit and we have enjoyed all of them. This time he kept saying that this is a MUST WATCH for all of us. So, we fixed up a time and started watching this documentary together……. and we were soon completely drawn into it. I will not use the word ‘enjoyment’ in association with this work, because this depiction of reality is something that can scare you, haunt you and you can lose your sleep over it. Nevertheless, it is very important for all of us not just to see it, but to think about the problems portrayed here and try and find solutions before it is too late to do anything and this monster takes over the whole world and manipulates it completely.

Later we also watched an interview of Tristan Harris, the producer and the brain behind this documentary in Joe Rogan’s podcast. All 3 of us felt that Tristan was speaking from his heart and that he is genuinely interested in the well-being of the human society and is trying his best to help in whichever way he can.

Some of the dangers that this documentary talks about are “trying to unscrupulously increase the screen time of the younger generation , manipulating the posts/videos that the person is watching, increasing the rift between different races/ communities, focusing on conspiracy theories, focusing on unscientific and unscrupulous data” etc

I will try to give you a summary of the essentials of this film in my next post if some of you are not able to watch it

In the current pandemic, most of us are working online, including very young children and adolescents who can be easily manipulated by advertisers. Very young children, who should not really be using smartphones, are permitted ( forced ,according to me ) to use them, exposing them to many dangers in the process if the parents are not careful. In this scenario, it is very important that parents monitor what their children are doing on the social media and guide them on the right path. Otherwise, very soon, we will be facing new and very severe challenges and problems in the new generation as they get manipulated by the social media. And these challenges could be much much worse than those with nuclear weapons or biological warfare , because the social media is hitting at the very foundation of Humanity

Do watch this documentary and show it to your children too.

Hoping and praying that all of us can protect ourselves and our family from this upcoming monster,

Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 98 of lockdown – Mandala 98

Good morning friends

“If you met your exact self as another person, would you like them ? Would they be a good friend ?” I came across this quote a few days ago and it started a chain of thoughts. And the longer I thought about it,the more I pondered over what is it that I like in another person.

As my thought process deepened, I realised that the answer is not very simple. Depending on my moods, I like different people at different times. At times, I am interested in having a good time, laughing and joking; at another time, I just want to sit quietly reading a book or listening to music ……another person is welcome at such times only if we can communicate in silence! There are yet other times when I want to go window shopping, or to an exhibition or to a movie and discuss issues about Life while we are doing that. Sometimes I just want to enjoy the breeze on the beach and watch the colours of the sunset or sit under the shade of a tree and appreciate the beauty of nature. And there are also times when I want to talk heart to heart with a friend, a soulmate…..

And there are very few people who can be all this in one, so I seek different people at different times depending on my needs and wants. And that is precisely the reason why all of us have vastly different types of friends, each one satisfying different needs at different times.

In general, I realised that I like people who are happy, satisfied, have a sense of fulfilment with what they do , have a good sense of humour , those who are ready to help others ( without any expectations ) and are at Peace with themselves.

When I reached this point in my thought chain, I started thinking about the kind of people that I do not like meeting or those I don’t consider as good friends. And I could pinpoint a few characteristics about such people. I am not really fond of meeting people who are complaining all the time, or those who persist in blaming others for their misfortune or those who want to control everyone around them. I am not keen on the company of people who are boasting about themselves or their achievements continuously. I don’t enjoy the company of people who are angry all the time, just as I don’t like to be in touch with people who like to find faults with others constantly. It is also difficult to look forward to meeting people who are always sad, as their sadness seems to stick on to you if you spend a lot of time with them.

Of course, all of us have these negative emotions at some time or the other. If the negativity occurs only occasionally, friends and family can help in tackling these vibrations. But if someone carries this negativity like a cloak around him / her, others may avoid such people.

But what if I myself , am continually caught up in such negativity? Do I like myself then? As I reached this point in my thought process, I remembered the rest of the quote. ” Remember that no one on earth spends more time with you than ………you ! ” And so, if I want a good friend, I need to be a person that I myself like and admire and want to spend time with ! If I am constantly angry or complaining or blaming or throwing out other negative emotions, would I like to spend time with myself? The answer is quite obvious, isn’t it ?

Reading and remembering this quote has inspired me to reflect on myself, on my strengths as well as my weaknesses. It has shown me my potential and also my weaker side. Most of all, it has encouraged me to be a good friend to myself !! Instead of searching for an illusory good friend outside, I have promised myself that I will try my best to be a good friend to myself.

What about you? Are you a good friend to yourself?

Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 99 of lockdown – Mandala 99

1st July
Day 99 of Lock down !
Good morning

Eckhart Tolle says, ” *Acceptance means : For now, this is what this situation, this moment, requires me to do , and so I do it willingly* “…..so simply put, yet so profound !

We hear some times from people in difficult situations ( like an illness or financial losses or loss of a loved one ), ” Why me ? “, ” Why do I always have to go through bad times ? ” or ” Why is everyone else spared this and only I am suffering ?” This group is all the time complaining and blaming others for their misfortune.

On the other hand, there are people who unconditionally accept the situation ( however bad it may be ) without wasting any time and energy fighting the problem
; and , as Eckhart Tolle says, just take the necessary action. This group of people is also more grateful for whatever assistance it receives.

Which of this group is happy, you think ? The answer is quite obvious, isn’t it ?

Taking the necessary action is of course, absolutely essential. But apart from that action, what is needed in such times, is total surrender to the situation ( or to the will of God if you believe in God ! )
It is important to remember that Surrender does not mean defeat and Letting go does not mean giving up ! It just means that you accept that there is something larger than you which controls your life and you surrender to that Power. Letting go of all the unnecessary fight leaves you with a lot of energy to actually take the necessary action.

As Osho says, ” *Total acceptance is the key ! It is the Master key, it opens all the doors* ”

As we hear about the Lock down being extended to 31st July, what is your reaction ? Are you accepting it unconditionally or are you fighting it ?

Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

Day 100 of lockdown – Mandala 100

2nd July
Day 100 of Lock down !
Day 100 of Mandala Musings !!

Good morning friends and family !

25th March ( गुढीपाडवा ), the first day of the year of the Hindu calendar, was also the first day of our Lock down. On that first day, when I sent out a Mandala, I had a vague notion of creating Alphabetical Mandalas for 21 days and writing a short relevant post along with it; as the initial Lock down was supposed to be for 21 days ! But as days passed by and the Lock down kept getting extended , I found myself writing longer posts which were appreciated by many of you. When the alphabets were over, I thought of stopping; but then felt that I had a lot more to share, so continued writing posts which could boost morale in the presence of the fear and the uncertainty created by the Pandemic.

Another reason to continue was the Love and appreciation I received from many of you. Many people told me that they waited for my post in the morning and the positive note in the posts helped them stay calm and relaxed in these turbulent times. This encouraged me to go on till today.
I have enjoyed this entire journey immensely. Though I have had to spend two hours or more every day on this project, it was time well spent. Everyday, when I thought about what to write, I had to reflect, introspect, dig into my life experiences to find the right thing to share ; and I learnt a lot during this process….about myself, about my own strengths and my own weaknesses, about Life in general…..and that is what made this entire process worth while. I do think I have gained much more than my readers in the last 100 days.

But now, I think it is time to stop the daily posts. I am not going to stop completely, I may write once ot twice a week depending on circumstances. I am also thinking of starting a blog….let’s see what happens in future.

But before I say Goodbye, let me thank all of you for the very very important role you have played in this journey. Without your encouragement, none of this would have been possible. So, a big THANK YOU to all my readers.

Until we meet again,
Love,
Anjali Bhatawdekar

WATCH FOR THE 3Cs – Dr. Vani Kulhalli

A person with mental health challenges needs constant support of key family members. A study called the ‘International Pilot Study Of Schizophrenia’ was done by the World Health Organisation. It was found that patients in India had better recovery than patients from Western countries and this difference was due the high quality of support they got from family members. So, a lot depends on the contribution of caregivers. We, mental health professionals look upon patient’s friends and family as important members of the treating team and caregivers are a great resource for us. Then, what makes a great CAREGIVER?

The 3Cs

Several personal qualities have been studied as essential to the caregiving role. These include empathy, love, compassion, competence, caring attitude, financial stability and so on. In my experience, the most important among them are- CONNECTION, COMMUNICATION and self- CARE. Any person who has found himself/ herself in the caregiving role can cultivate these qualities to help their loved one.

CONNECTION

The connection that a caregiver feels is mainly of compassion. Caregivers feel a deep concern for the patient and are invested in their well- being.  It is also true that sometimes one becomes a care-giver because there is no one else to take the responsibility. At such a time, one has to learn EMPATHY. Empathy means to visualize the patient’s situation and try to understand the effects that it has. When you have empathy, you will maintain your own point of view which may be different from that of the patient. As they say ‘we can disagree and yet stay together’. Caregiving does not mean that patient and the carer remain with each other all the time, to the exclusion of everything else. The caregiver supports by becoming available to the extent that is healthy for the patient and that does not lead to dependency. The connection between the patient and caregiver has to allow for freedom and individuality. Neither the patient nor the caregiver exerts control over the other.

COMMUNICATION

Caregivers are the ‘first responders’. Whenever a person feels turmoil, it is the caregiver who soothes them. Caregivers have to therefore be good at communication. Good communication means to ‘speak less and listen more’. The caregiver uses both verbal and non- verbal means to give comfort. Caregivers must avoid ‘çounseling’, ‘motivating’ or ‘logical reasoning’. Patient’s condition is usually due to brain responses that are beyond control. So trying to talk the patient out of their symptoms or their behaviors causes more stress to them. Best is to be available to the patient when they want to express and listen calmly to what is being said. You don’t have to agree to everything they say but there is no need to try to change the patient’s beliefs- that is the professional’s job. Often non-verbal means like being nearby to the patient, looking at the patient softly, holding hand, patting the shoulder or holding them close- all done without uttering a word, help the patient to feel secure and better.

Another important communication role is to coordinate with the rest of the treating team. As caregivers are in close contact with the patient, they can share their observations. It helps us to correctly understand the behavior, effects and side effects of medicines. It is a useful habit to write down observations and carry this to the consultation. Caregivers also have to remind the patient about treatment instructions that they may be not following properly. They will need to learn to be tactful and assertive when some of the instructions are not to the liking of the patient.

SELF CARE

Being a caregiver is a very stressful situation. Research has shown that due to the demands of this role, sometimes caregivers themselves go through a lot of problems. The problems vary from boredom, anger, lack of a sense of well-being to the development of chronic or serious health problems. Taking care of a person with mental illness is not a short term task but a long term commitment. The problems are sometimes complicated and resources are limited. It taxes the abilities of even the strongest of people. The best course of action is to work on remaining strong enough to be able to handle all the challenges. Some people see their problems as arising out of the patient’s mental condition. This makes them feel that continuously trying to improve the patient’s condition is the only way. This is not true. While the patient’s condition is being addressed, the caregiver has to make separate efforts to restore themselves. These efforts are called ‘self -care’ activities. Some time and resources are required to do self- care activities. Also self- care activities are effective only when done regularly. Caregivers should not feel guilty about taking out the time or spending some money to take care of themselves.

Activities for self- care

  1. Time out and diversion

Caregivers must take regular, daily breaks from being with the patient. They should pursue their hobbies and social activities to the extent possible. This is possible by sharing responsibilities.

  1. Diet, sleep and exercise

A balanced diet with plenty of fluids, vitamins and minerals is as important for the caregiver as it is for the patient. Ensure proper hours of restful sleep as that refreshes the system. It is also important to avoid using cigarettes, alcohol, sleeping pills and such substances.

  1. Daily exercise- whether it is yoga, brisk walking or dance is essential
  2. Health monitoring and health care As per the age, caregivers need to get regular check- ups for their own health problems. If advised some medicines or treatments, they should meticulously follow them and maintain health
  3. Stress Management

Caregivers have to face many issues other than taking care of the patient. So there is a lot to be handled at the same time. Some form of purposeful stress management will need to be learnt. Maintaining healthful habits, diet, hobbies and regular schedule helps to manage stress. In addition, you can seek counseling and treatment for yourself from the treating Psychiatrist. There are also support groups of caregivers where people can support each other by sharing coping strategies. Meditation and mindfulness are helpful for many people.

  1. Living a full life

Sometimes mental health issues completely envelop the caregiver and drown out every other aspect of life. This is not recommended. Mental illness is a huge challenge but let it be only a part of your life; do not allow it to take over your whole life. Caregivers should pay attention to living life to the fullest, as much as possible. This means to continue your work, hobbies and friendships with good planning and to the extent that it is possible.

  1. Attitude management

Caregivers go through guilt, fear or shame. They feel a sense of defeat when mental illness is diagnosed in their loved ones. But the fact is that mental illness is not caused by any one factor and no person is to be blamed for causing it. One has to cultivate hope and confidence. A scientifically informed approach and ‘can-do’ attitude is required.

In conclusion the Caregivers are the bedrock of the patient’s recovery. In the caregiving role one has to pay attention to developing the 3Cs for success.

The Journey of Therapy – Satori Pansare

How many therapists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Only one but the lightbulb has to want to change!

Starting point

To acknowledge the fact that some things need changing or that there is a problem, is really the starting point from where therapy can begin. While therapy can work wonders, therapists aren’t magicians. Therapy is a two-way street. Efforts are required from both ends to create those wonders people talk about. As a client then, the first step really is just to come to terms with the idea of change. Change is uncomfortable but accepting that it is going to be uncomfortable really makes the discomfort easier to handle. In a case wherein the client is reluctant or is forcefully brought in by a relative, there is very little a therapist can do to help.

Key ingredients

Once you have reached the point of acceptance and are willing to take on the challenge of changing, you will find yourself sitting across from your therapist trying to unravel many jumbled thoughts and feelings. While merely unloading all of the weight you have been carrying around (knowingly or unknowingly) can provide a sense of relief, it doesn’t change circumstances. For things to change and become better, active participation and patience are required.

It is most likely that what you are going through is not something that has occurred overnight. Hence, for any sort of change to reflect, it will take time as first there might be need for some undoing before you can learn new, healthy ways of coping. And when things do start changing for the better, be sure to recognise and celebrate. Every small change is a stepping stone towards your growth.

Finding answers

No two people are the same. Each client walks in with a unique background and set of experiences. Hence, you and your therapist will work together to find out what works best for you and what will help you grow in your circumstances. It is natural to have questions and doubts along the way but it is important to remember that there are no readymade answers. The role of a therapist is not that of an advisor. Rather, the role of a therapist is more of that of a facilitator and a sounding board.

Direction and destination

Therapy might feel like merely talking to another person but that is not the case. Your therapist is a trained professional who uses evidence based techniques to nudge you towards growth. What really sets therapy apart from a casual conversation is therapy goals.

And while some clients may come into therapy knowing exactly where they want to end up, others may have no clue at all. Either way once it is established what the issue at hand is, the therapist and client mutually decide goals and draw a road map to what it might take to reach their destination. Therapy goals also allow both the therapist and client to measure and evaluate progress over time.

Therapy is a journey. A journey where your therapist is holding the torch for you to be able to see the road ahead. Some days  you might cover a lot of distance. Some days it might be difficult to take a few steps ahead. Some days you might have to go back and revisit places in the past. Some days you may choose to spend more time and take in the place where you are. Trust the process, for with every session the path becomes clearer and you are taking a step closer to where you want to be.

Circadian rhythms – Dr. Sujay Prabhugaonkar

COVID times

“We’re all shift workers’ ‘ – Dr Satchitananda Panda.

Our sleep is periodically disrupted when we pull an all nighter for studies or when we travel different time zones or when we nurse a sick relative or when nursing a newborn child or when a working mother wakes up early morning to prepare meals for her family and sets off to work.

But during COVID times our sleep was regularly disrupted for days on end.   This set up a prolonged jet lag which led to sleep deficit. Not to mention other aspects that added to this like digital jet lag (jet lag due to devices).

Problem amplification

I remember regularly seeing patients who would come for problems related to sleep and disturbed routine.

One student I remember would stay up late to chat with friends and get up late just before his online classes. This resulted in nausea during the morning which would lead to him eating very little during daytime. But during early evenings he would get very hungry and would binge eat, specially sweets. This resulted in his obesity and tiredness and lethargy during daytime. He found it difficult to concentrate on his lectures.

Our biological clock

During lockdown routine has been disrupted. This has given rise to clocks going out of sync. I mean our biological clocks or in other words our Circadian Rhythm. Other examples of clocks going out of sync are during jet lag when the person travels towards a different time zones and during shift work.

How the rhythm is regulated

We have a suprachiasmatic nucleus in our brain which responds to light. At 12am when there’s completely dark, melatonin is secreted which tells us it’s time to sleep. This melatonin secretion stops by 7am. If we don’t sleep during that time, sleep debt occurs which leads to sleep deprivation.

When we wake up in the morning cortisol secretion starts and peaks at 8am. This cortisol arouses us and wakes us out of sleep. This cortisol also increases glucose levels in our blood. Thus glucose levels are highest early in the morning. This is the right time to do workout so that we can convert excess glucose into energy and we can reap the maximum benefits of exercise.

Disrupted rhythms

But, although circadian rhythm is a part of our nature, which develops at the age of 3 to 6 months in infants, it is not a constant thing. We can reset our clocks. Bright light exposure in the evening makes our brain feel it’s still daytime and we can be active till late hours. Conversely, dull lights in our cabins during work hours make our brains feel it’s night and we yawn. But these frequent disruptions in circadian rhythms can cause many health problems. Problems range from insomnia and sleep deprivation to obesity, diabetes, hypertension etc. Even our longevity gets affected. Thus, it’s good to stay in bright lights during daytime and keep pitch dark at night without taking our phone to bed so that the melatonin secretion continues.

Zeitgeber or time giver

Our circadian rhythms are turned on by specific cues which regulate body rhythms. Newly married couple initially takes time to adjust to each other’s sleep rhythms but eventually they’re set for the long term. That is why those who lose their spouses or those who get separated have disrupted rhythms and the grieving person has difficulty sleeping and can go into depression. Thus traumatic life events can give rise to mood disorders due to this mechanism.

Mental health

Disturbance in circadian rhythms give rise to mental health problems too. Those who have depression, have irregular sleep wake cycles and abnormal cortisol levels. The treatment of mild depression can be done by light therapy or sleep deprivation (by reducing REM sleep). Thus, during  episodes of mild depression, just by entraining the circadian rhythm, depression can be cured.

Also disrupted circadian rhythm can be a trigger for Bipolar disorder, especially the manic phase of bipolar disorder in which there is decreased need for sleep. Thus one of the treatments for bipolar disorder is Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) which is meant to regulate individual’s social rhythms such as meal times, personal relationships, exercise and social demands.

Conclusion

Thus, we have to set our internal clocks in order and synchronise it to a day night 24 hour cycle, which can help us in living a healthy and fulfilling life. It will not only help in overcoming lifestyle diseases like hypertension, diabetes etc but can help in psychological disorders like depression, bipolar disorder etc as well as increase longevity and would go a long way to prevent major medical illnesses.
